BEFORE YOU PROCEED, make sure to backup your important files (saves, Tray, Mods folder) first.
If you have plenty of mods, the task of updating them after a game update can be daunting, but there are ways to make it easier and faster with the proper tools.
AUTO UPDATING
A new way to update your mods is by using the official mod hub for The Sims 4 CurseForge. This new tool was designed to automatically update your mods as soon as an update becomes available.
MANUAL UPDATING
If, for some reason, the CurseForge doesn't work for you or for some mods that require multiple files, you can manually update your mods this way:

1) First thing you want to do is to check the status of the mods/CCs and see if the mods/CCs that you use are updated or are cleared for use by their creators. Note that this list does not include NSFW mods so you will have to manually check their individual websites for updates.
Popular mods tend to be easier to update because their creators are most likely to fix them right away. As to the other mods, you will have to wait until their creators fix them.
TIP: A lot of mod creators are on Twitter and post their updates there, so do follow them to keep yourself updated about their mods. You may also join Facebook Groups about The Sims 4 as most simmers do post updates about mods there, too.
2) When you see a mod as updated in the list, go to the website where you downloaded it and look for the following: change log/update patch notes, date it was last updated, game version that it supports or is compatible with.
Let's take Wicked Whims and Basemental as examples. The download page contains all the information that you need to make sure you are downloading the compatible version of the mod to your current game version. If you don't know your current game version number, click here to know how.

If your game version is the latest, you will have to wait for the mod creators to release an updated version of their mods or at least clear their mods for use if they deem it compatible with the latest game version.
If you are using an older game version, you would need to look for an older version of the mod that is compatible with your current game version.

4) After you have downloaded the compatible mod version, unzip it if the file/folder is zipped, delete the older version of the mod from your Mods folder and then place the new unzipped file/folder inside the Mods folder.
Don't forget to delete the localthumbcache.package file from The Sims 4 folder. This ensures that no residue of the mods/CCs you took out is left, and that the new ones you placed are properly recognized by your game. You do this every time you add or remove anything from your Mods folder.
5) If you haven't yet, download and install Better Exceptions. It is a good tool to use for scanning for outdated/broken/duplicate mods/CCs. If Better Exceptions finds problematic mods/CCs, take note of the recommendations in the report it gives you and follow it. Remember to exit WITHOUT saving and proceed to fix the issues that Better Exceptions has cited.
6) For broken/outdated CCs, use Sims4Studio to batch update them.
7) Alternatively, you may use Tray Importer to manually delete or update CCs.
8) Once you have sorted everything out, playtest it. If an error occurs, take a screenshot of the error and then exit WITHOUT saving.
9) Google the error and find solutions or see if you can find a fix.
