How To Troubleshoot For Mod Issues

Having trouble with a mod? Follow these simple steps to troubleshoot any mod issues:

1) ARE MODS AND CUSTOM CONTENTS ENABLED IN YOUR GAME?
Mods and custom contents get disabled during a game update to prevent them from breaking. You need to enable/re-enable them before you play. Here's how.

2) DID YOU DELETE THE LOCALTHUMBCACHE FILE?
The localthumbcache file stores game data and tends to accumulate over time which can slow down your game. It can also potentially damage your saves if you forget to delete it after making changes in your game (ex. adding or removing mods) since those changes were not properly applied. Doing this usually solves most game issues such as lagging and crashing.

3) DID YOU CHECK FOR DUPLICATE MODS/CCs?
Check if you have a duplicate of the mod in your Mods folder. You can use Better Exceptions to find them. Delete it (if any) and delete the localthumbcache file after.

4) ARE MOD FILES IN A SUBFOLDER?
Check if the mod file/s is/are in a subfolder. Script mods cannot be buried more than one folder deep into your Mods folder, so make sure they aren't. Refer to below example (WickedWhims mod):

THIS IS WRONG

THIS IS CORRECT

5) ARE YOUR MODS UPDATED / COMPATIBLE WITH YOUR GAME VERSION? Check the mod if it's updated or compatible with your current game version.  Also check the mod version by going to the website where you downloaded it from and read the mod description where the mod version or what game version it is compatible with is indicated.

6) IS THERE ANY MOD THAT MAY BE CONFLICTING WITH ANOTHER MOD? Some mods just don't work together, so see if there's another mod that may be conflicting with each other using Better Exceptions. If Better Exceptions didn't find any issues, do the 50/50 Cleaning Method.

7) ARE YOUR MODS NOT SHOWING UP OR ARE MISSING? If you have an active cloud storage like OneDrive, it can mess up your files during syncing, so either unsync your sims files/folder with it, or completely uninstall it. Do backup important files you have on there before uninstalling if you chose to uninstall instead.

8) ARE YOUR MODS WONKY / GLITCHING? Remove the mod, download the latest compatible version, and then install. Remember to delete the localthumbcache before you run your game.

OTHER ISSUES:

Done everything above and still having issues and don't know if and which mod is causing it?

Most of the time, issues in the game are mod-related especially if you have a lot of them.  So, just to rule them out, take out ALL of your mods and CCs, delete the localthumbcache.package file, run your game on a new save (not an existing save) and observe.

SCENARIO 1:
If the game runs fine, then it means it is indeed mod-related.  Now to find the culprit, you can do the following:

A) If the issue happened after a game update, check the status of mods/CCs and redownload those that were considered safe to use or have been updated. If you don't find the mod in the list, go to the website where you got it and check if the creator has updated it or cleared it for use.

If the issue appeared after you installed mods/CCs, look into those you recently installed first. Most likely those mods/CCs just need updating.

B) If you don't want to go through all that trouble,you can scan your game to find broken mods / CCs;

C) If that doesn't work, try to batch update your CCs;

D) If that still doesn't give you good results, try the 50/50 cleaning method.

SCENARIO 2:
If your game still acts up even when playing vanilla, it could mean your user data may have been corrupted. Try any of the following fixes:

1) Do a Factory Reset;
2) Repair your game (
Make sure there are no mods/CCs in your Mods folder before you do this so as not to do further damage to your saves);
3) Uninstall / Reinstall your game
4) Uninstall/Reinstall Origin

LAGGING, FREEZING, CRASHING, NOT STARTING, LOADING FOREVER

LAGGING/FREEZING/CRASHING - Lagging/freezing/crashing could be due to a number of reasons like your computer specs (memory, processor, storage, outdated drivers/software, etc.), broken/outdated mods, accumulated cache/temporary files, corrupt files, etc.

NOT STARTING - This issue is almost always due to a broken custom content (CC).

LOADING FOREVER - When your game loads forever, it could be a sign of a broken or outdated mod or CC, especially if it happened if you recently added some or after a game update.

Loading forever is also an indication of a corrupt save. Unfortunately, I don't know of any sure way to fix it.  Most often, it's irreversible, but you could try the fixes under SCENARIO 2 above.
