Misplaced
This mod adds random lost-item events, home searches, trait effects, and consequences to your game.

Misplaced by OtterStudio is a gameplay mod for The Sims 4 that introduces a simple but engaging everyday problem: Sims can occasionally lose important belongings around their home.

Instead of always knowing exactly where everything is, Sims may suddenly discover that their keys, phone, wallet, or homework is missing. Players then need to search different furniture and rooms to locate the item before its absence begins affecting the Sim's daily life.

This small gameplay mechanic adds more unpredictability and gives ordinary household routines an extra layer of interaction.

How the Lost Item System Works

Lost-item events occur approximately once per Sim week, with at least three Sim days between possible events. The event can only happen while the Sim is on their home lot.

When something goes missing, the Sim receives a notification and a special moodlet that remains active until the item is recovered.

The type of item that can disappear depends on the Sim's age.

Items That Can Go Missing

Keys

Keys can go missing for Teen and Adult Sims.

If the keys aren't recovered within the available search period, the Sim can experience reduced productivity at work. This gives players a reason to search for them before the consequences begin.

Cell Phone

Phones can be misplaced by Children, Teens, and Adult Sims.

A missing phone gives the Sim a negative moodlet because they feel disconnected from their usual communication.

Wallet

Wallets can be lost by Teens and Adult Sims.

If the wallet remains missing, the Sim can become worried about their finances and receive a negative mood.

Homework

Homework can go missing for Children and Teens.

Failing to recover it can eventually affect school performance, making the search especially important for students.

Search Your Home

Once an item has been misplaced, Sims gain a new Search interaction that can be used on supported furniture around the house.

Possible search locations include:
  • Chests of drawers
  • Nightstands
  • Desks
  • Shelves
  • Under beds
  • Under sofas

The system also supports custom-content furniture, allowing searches to work with more than the standard objects included in the game.

This makes the feature particularly useful for players who use custom furniture in their builds.

Search Takes Time

Searching isn't an instant action.

Each search takes approximately 15–20 Sim minutes, making the process feel like an actual household activity rather than a simple button press.

There is also a cooldown for furniture that has already been checked without success. After searching a particular piece of furniture, Sims must wait approximately 2 Sim hours before searching that same location again.

This encourages players to check different pieces of furniture and explore multiple rooms instead of repeatedly searching the same spot.

A Gradually Increasing Chance of Success

Finding a misplaced item uses a progressive probability system.

The first search has a 20% chance of finding the item. If the search fails, the chance increases by another 20% on each subsequent attempt.

The progression is:

1st attempt: 20%
2nd attempt: 40%
3rd attempt: 60%
4th attempt: 80%
5th attempt: 100%

This means that a Sim is guaranteed to recover the item by the fifth successful search attempt, assuming the necessary searches can be completed.

The system creates some uncertainty while ensuring that players aren't left searching indefinitely.

What Happens If You Don't Find the Item?

If the lost item hasn't been recovered within 12 Sim hours, the Sim stops actively searching for it and the relevant consequences can begin.

The effects depend on what was misplaced:
  • Keys: Reduced work productivity
  • Homework: Declining school performance
  • Phone: Negative moodlet
  • Wallet: Financial worry and negative mood

This gives players a practical reason to prioritize certain lost items depending on their Sim's current responsibilities.

Personality Traits Matter

Misplaced also takes certain personality traits into account, meaning not every Sim is equally likely to lose or recover their belongings.

Slob Sims

Sims with the Slob trait are more likely to misplace items, with their loss frequency increased by two times.

Fickle / Crazy Sims

Sims with the Fickle or Crazy traits also have an increased chance of losing belongings.

If a Sim has both Slob and Fickle traits, their likelihood of misplacing items can become even higher.

Neat Freak Sims

Neat Freak Sims are more organized and lose items less frequently. Their chance of experiencing a lost-item event is reduced by half.

Genius Sims

Genius Sims have an advantage when searching for misplaced belongings, giving them a higher chance of successfully finding an item.

These trait-based differences make the mechanic feel more connected to each Sim's personality.
