How To Check Your DirectX Version

To confirm if you're running DirectX 11 is easy!

Just go to the main menu in The Sims 4 and check the bottom right corner of the screen.

DirectX version

That's it!

Other ways to check:

Method 1: Use the DirectX Diagnostic Tool (dxdiag)
  1. Press Windows + R to open the Run dialog.
  2. Type dxdiag and press Enter.
  3. In the System tab, look for DirectX Version at the bottom.
  4. It will say something like DirectX 11 or DirectX 12.

Method 2: Check The Sims 4 Configuration
The Sims 4 supports DirectX 9 and DirectX 11, and it uses DirectX 11 by default on modern systems.

Navigate to:
  1. Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 4\Options.ini
  2. Open the Options.ini file with Notepad.
  3. Look for this line:
  • RenderAPI
  • RenderAPI = 0 → DirectX 11
  • RenderAPI = 1 → DirectX 9

(You can change it here if needed, but better to do it through the game settings.)

Method 3: Check In-Game Settings
  1. Launch The Sims 4.
  2. Go to Game Options → Graphics.
  3. If you see the Uncompressed Sim Textures option and advanced lighting effects, you’re likely using DirectX 11.
  4. On older PCs or when forced to DirectX 9, some graphics options (like edge smoothing) will be limited.
