Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID): DID, formerly known as Multiple Personality Disorder, is a mental disorder characterized by the presence of two or more distinct dissociated states or identities within an individual. It's considered an extreme form of dissociation and is typically a result of severe childhood trauma. Individuals with DID often experience Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) as well. The condition typically manifests in childhood.
Vocabulary:
System: A term used to describe the entire group of alters (different identities).
Alter: These are the distinct dissociated states sharing the body of a person with DID.
Fronting: When an alter is in control of the body.
Conscious: When an alter is present but not necessarily in control of the body.
Blending: When it's uncertain which alter is currently in control.
Inner World: Some individuals with DID have an inner world where alters reside when they're not fronting. This inner world can vary widely in appearance and behavior.
