How To Uninstall Origin

by - November 02, 2020

There are two ways to uninstall Origin from your computer: the easy way, and the hard way.

But before we go into details, please remember that by uninstalling Origin from your computer, you won't be able to play EA games or any content you downloaded from there until you install it again.  Further, you also run the risk of losing data or files that were previously validated by Origin. Nevertheless, as long as you backed up game files that are important to you, there shouldn't be any reason to worry once you decide to reinstall Origin as it will re-download all your games.

So, are you ready to uninstall? Here's how:

THE EASY WAY

PC

The easiest way to uninstall it is by using the Uninstall a program tool that’s built into your PC. Find it in the Control Panel.
  1. Open the Control Panel by searching for it in the Start menu.
  2. Click Uninstall a program under Programs.
  3. Click Origin, then click Uninstall.
  4. You’ll get a warning that EA games may not be functional.
  5. Click Uninstall.
  6. When you want to reinstall Origin, download it from origin.com.

Mac

  1. Find the Origin client launcher in your Applications folder.
  2. Drag the Origin client launcher to the Trash.
  3. Empty your Trash.
  4. This removes Origin from your Mac. When you want to reinstall Origin, download it from origin.com.

THE HARD WAY

If you are uninstalling Origin for the purpose of troubleshooting your game, you may need  extra steps to do it.

Please note that these steps can harm your computer if not properly done.  If you are unsure about how to do it, it is highly recommended that you seek out help from a computer professional to do it for you instead.

In some extreme cases, you may need to edit your system registry and remove the folders in a two-part process. This will remove all traces of Origin from your system for a completely blank slate.

Just a reminder: these steps are more advanced than the Control Panel uninstall. Editing your computer's registry or files incorrectly can severely damage your operating system. If you are confident that you can edit your registry successfully, then follow the instructions below.

Important! You need to fully close Origin before you uninstall it.

  1. Quit out of the Origin client.
  2. Open up Task Manager on your computer. To do that, press your CTRL + ALT + Delete buttons all at the same time, then click Task Manager.
  3. In the Processes tab, check to see if there are any Origin processes still running. They would be called OriginWebHelperService or OriginClientService.
  4. End any of the still-running Origin processes you see. This will make sure Origin is fully closed.
Now you can follow these steps to uninstall Origin:

First, remove the Origin client files:
  1. Select Computer from the Start menu.
  2. Select the C: drive.
  3. Select the Program Files folder. On 64-bit systems it’s called Program Files (x86).
  4. Right-click the Origin folder and select Delete.
  1. Next, back up your Windows registry:
  2. Hold down the Windows key and press R.
  3. Type regedit at the Run command and select OK.
  4. Select File.
  5. Select Export.
  6. Under Export Range, select All.
  7. Choose a location and name for the backup file, then select Save.
  8. Third, remove your Origin registry keys:
  9. From regedit, expand the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE folder.
  10. Expand the SOFTWARE folder.
  11. Expand the Wow6432node folder.
  12. You might see multiple Wow6432node folders; find the one with an Origin folder in it.
  13. Right-click the Origin folder and select Delete.
  14. Expand the Microsoft folder.
  15. Expand the Windows folder.
  16. Expand the CurrentVersion folder.
  17. Expand the Uninstall folder.
  18. Right-click the Origin folder and select Delete.
Last, remove your Origin program cache:

  1. Select Computer from the Start menu.
  2. Select the C: drive.
  3. Select the ProgramData folder.
  4. If this folder doesn’t appear, press Alt, select Tools > Folder Options > View, then check Show hidden files, folders, and drives.
  5. Right-click the Origin folder and select Delete.
Completing these steps should completely remove the Origin client from your system.
